You know, what’s interesting is that in all the years I’ve been doing this 40 years now, I’ve met no consistently successful market timers and so you’re 100 percent right.

They’ve got to stay the course. I think my father’s been the best at this and he has harnessed the power of being oblivious. He doesn’t panic during a market downturn because he’s not aware there is one.

All he’s doing is following his sports teams and going for walks. I tell him the market’s down 20%. He goes, “Oh, that’s unbelievable. I didn’t know that.” He pays no attention and therefore he’s not drawn in emotionally, because you’re right—we’re likely to panic.
