The Power of $11 a Day

A short paragraph in “The Wealthy Barber” that I thought was relatively inconsequential, hasn’t been. At all.

Hey, we’re getting a lot of feedback from readers about the update of “The Wealthy Barber.” I love hearing from everybody. Very good feedback, by the way, although I wouldn’t tell you otherwise. I’ve been caught off guard by how many positive comments one little paragraph has drawn. One little paragraph that I didn’t think a single reader would be impacted by enough to ever bother bringing it up to me.

It’s been very cool, actually. So listen up. Clearly there’s something here. On page 185, Kyle talked about how he wanted to save an extra $4,000 a year for his FHSA. Love the FHSA. But he feels there’s no way he could do it. Until Sourov points out that’s only $11 a day. That reframing, that very basic reframing, changed Kyle’s mindset. But, way more important,

we’ve had a bunch of readers say it changed theirs too. That incredibly simple example really hit them. Made them more optimistic about their savings goals and more determined. One couple said they actually started having fun by gamifying their spending decisions, looking to save $20 a day somehow, some way. They started competing with each other.

Love it. Hey, breaking your savings goals down into daily or weekly totals can often help psychologically. Smaller number.

Now if I cut Mo’s salary by a mere $10 a day, what would that amount do for me? Death!
