The Budget Cuts People DON’T Regret

Alcohol. Starbucks. Cable TV. What do these three things have in common? They were — BY FAR — the most common responses to a question we posted to our followers recently: What’s something you’ve cut from your budget and don’t miss it all? The key part there? Don’t miss it all. For 40 years I’ve been doing this, and interestingly, maybe even shockingly, I find most people don’t miss

most cutbacks they make in discretionary spending. We adjust quickly. Life goes on. And our top three certainly didn’t surprise me. People have been cutting the cable cords for years and moving to streaming, of course. Starbucks is great, but hey, it’s expensive and people tend to find a less costly substitute in a hurry.

Caffeine, caffeine, caffeine — it’s not hard to find. And dropping alcohol, hey, we’ve already done a video on that. So many people are quitting drinking and finding themselves with more money. And often more energy and often more happiness. In the fourth spot by the way, in our poll is a second car. I have found this dropped item is the one that often leads to the most surprise when the dropping people’s lives

continue on just fine. “There’s no way we can get by without a second car. Absolutely Impossible.” Often turns into, “Why didn’t we do that sooner?” within a month. I know many of you won’t believe that, but it’s true. By the way, my favourite response to “What’s something you’ve cut from your budget and don’t miss at all?”

My ex-husband.
